Abstract: the association of figures with architectural supports has its origins in Egyptian architecture of the 18th and 19th dynasties, i.e. around 1500 BC. The Egyptian experience was taken up by the Greeks and Romans. The disappearance of the Roman Empire and the fragmentation of Europe caused them to fall into disuse. With Romanesque architecture, the linking of figures and columns re-emerged. This work provides a historical overview of the use of supports with figures in Galician and northern Portuguese architecture, from the Romanesque period to the 18th century.
